... the story started in 1970s, in Afghanistan, Kabul, where the two children, Amir and Hassan, had their best years of childhood ... Amir, the son of a successful merchant, was very close with the son of his servant, Hassan... " people feeding from the same breast have a kind of brotherhood between them," that was what Ali, the servant told Amir on their friendship... Hassan is always loyal and faithful to Amir, and he still is till the end of his life, years later... "For you, a thousand times over" was what Hassan said to Amir... together, they spent the most precious and beautiful times of their childhood... they stayed very close, even though in Amir's heart, he wasn't sure if he WOULD consider Hassan as his friend, as they come from different status, different class of people... Hassan is a Hazara, the clan i think which is looked down on at that time in Afghanistan ...
... and changes came and had their lives changed, their friendship changed... war, sin and betrayal all led them to different lives, different future... after a kite tournament, which Amir and Hassan actually won, Amir witnessed Hassan get raped, by the boys who used to bully them, when he ran for the last kite... Hassan sacrificed himself for the kite he would never give on to the bullies, and Amir didn't stand up for him... he ran away, cowardly ... feeling guilty and sinful, he started to avoid Hassan... innocent Hassan tried to get to him, but he just kept on avoiding... Amir even blamed Hassan for stealing his watch, and Hassan the loyal servant took the blame... but at the same time, Ali and Hassan moved out of the house, knowing that their little master would not want to see them there anymore...
... and then war exploded in Afghanistan, and Amir escaped to USA with his father, starting of a new life there, getting a good career and marry a good wife...
... it was twenty six years later when Rahim Khan, Amir's Baba best friend, called from Pakistan, asking Amir to go there... "there's always a way to be good again..." he told on the phone before hanging up... after reaching there, Amir was shocked as the truth unveils in front of him... Hassan, is actually his half brother!... ( true, i was shocked when i read about this) and he got killed by the Taliban when he was trying to protect their old mansion from the Taliban... now, Rahim Khan asked Amir to go rescue his son, Sohrab from Afghanistan... trying to redeem his sins and lies, he went on the journey... in the end, he managed to save out Sohrab, and adopted him... the story ended with Sohrab brought to USA with Amir, and the barrier between them finally began to break down...
... this novel is really touching for me... the friendship and faith Hassan had in Amir, how loyal he is, and how he is willing to go all out for his Amir agha... i got touched by that friendship... and the stroryline is really interesting, despite focussing on the friendship of Amir and Hassan, it actually reveals the way Afghanis had lived for the past 40 years, from monarchy to the shorawis to Taliban... and their ways of looking at life, how they take life...
... i love this novel so much , and it really worth reading, believe me...
... read yourself, get yourself in the situation, and you'll be touched...
... truly great work of literature...
... looking forward on the movie, coming out soon in April ...
... let the kites fly in our skies, run for the kites, run for the love, the friendship we appreciate, the people we seriously care...
... run to them, don't let regrets fill your life after they've gone ...
... run to them ...
